100 Tonson Foundation is excited to share that Wish You Were Here (2008), a monumental bronze sculpture by acclaimed Thai contemporary artist Chatchai Puipia, has entered the permanent collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Now prominently installed outdoors in the museum’s newly revitalized Sculpture Garden, the work represents a significant addition to the Hirshhorn’s international holdings, bringing an important example of Asian contemporary sculpture into sustained public view.

Rising over three meters in scale, Wish You Were Here presents a monumental reclining figure laid down in a cross-legged posture, suspended between rest and reflection. The sculpture reflects Puipia’s distinctive practice of translating painterly sensibility into three-dimensional form, transforming personal memory into an enduring sculptural presence. Evoking stillness, contemplation, and quiet intimacy, the work offers a meditative counterpoint to its surrounding civic landscape, bridging interior experience with the monumental space of the nation’s capital.

The sculpture will be unveiled in a first preview at the museum’s forthcoming space, East Overlook on Friday, April 3, 2026 with a special event held in conjunction with this preview will be organized by the Royal Thai Embassy and graciously hosted by H.E. Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, Ambassador of Thailand to the United States, underscoring the cultural and diplomatic significance of the work. The Sculpture Garden will open to the public in October 2026.

100 Tonson coordinated the production of the first edition of Wish You Were Here in 2007, after which the sculpture remained in a private collection in Napa, California. In 2025, it entered the Hirshhorn Museum collection as a gift from 100 Tonson’s founder, Ek-Anong (Aey) Phanachet, and her husband, Roger Evans. It is a profound honor that the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden—home to one of the most significant modern and contemporary sculpture collections in the world—has selected to place Wish You Were Here prominently on view. The presence of this major work of Asian contemporary culture in Washington, D.C. fosters meaningful global connection at a timely moment, as the United States approaches the celebration of its 250th anniversary.

With this important acquisition, Chatchai Puipia joins fellow Thai contemporary artists Rirkrit Tiravanija and Pinaree Sanpitak in the Hirshhorn Museum’s collection. The inclusion of these three leading figures marks another significant gift from 100 Tonson’s founder to the museum, reflecting the Foundation’s continued commitment to sharing outstanding Thai contemporary art with esteemed international institutions and advancing cultural exchange through global visibility.

 

About the Artist

Chatchai Puipia is widely regarded as one of Thailand’s most significant contemporary artists. His multidisciplinary practice moves fluidly between painting and sculpture, engaging themes of longing, spirituality, memory, and peace. Drawing inspiration from intimate recollections of rural life and lived experience, Puipia’s work resonates across cultural contexts through its poetic symbolism and emotional depth.

He graduated from Silpakorn University and gained international recognition in the 1990s with his acclaimed Siamese Smile self-portrait series. His most recent exhibition, the landmark retrospective Catch the Moon | Chatchai Puipia: The Caught Years, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (2025–2026).

Puipia’s work has been exhibited internationally at major institutions, including Asia Society Museum and Queens Museum, New York (1996–1997); Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art (1996–1997); Shanghai Biennale (2000); Singapore Biennale (2006); ZKM, Germany (2007); and Saatchi Gallery, London (2015–2016). His works are held in prominent public collections such as Mori Art Museum (Tokyo), Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, and National Gallery Singapore, and are also displayed throughout Park Hyatt Bangkok, Thailand.

He lives and works in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2006, he received Thailand’s prestigious Silpathorn Award.

ผลงาน Wish You Were Here เป็นประติมากรรมร่างบุคคลในท่ากึ่งเอนกายไขว่ห้างในอริยาบถผ่อนคลายที่มีขนาดความสูงกว่า 3 เมตร ผลงานชิ้นนี้ได้สะท้อนวิธีการทำงานของชาติชายอันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ ที่แปลความรู้สึกจากภายในผลงานจิตรกรรมบนระนาบสองมิติไปสู่การเป็นประติมากรรมสามมิติ ภายใต้บรรยากาศแห่งความสงบ ภาวะแห่งการครุ่นคิด และความอบอุ่นอันเรียบง่าย ผลงานชิ้นนี้จึงยังทำหน้าที่เป็นจุดสมดุลของความสงบและความสันโดษในพื้นที่สาธารณะอันยิ่งใหญ่ที่เต็มด้วยการแวดล้อมของผู้คน อาคารและสิ่งก่อสร้างสำคัญในบริเวณโดยรอบ The National Mall กรุงวอชิงตัน ดี.ซี.เมืองหลวงของประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา

ผลงานชิ้นนี้จะได้รับการเปิดตัวเป็นครั้งแรกในวันศุกร์ที่ 3 เมษายน 2568 ณ East Overlook ภายในสวนประติมากรรม พร้อมด้วยงานเลี้ยงเปิดตัวที่จัดโดยสถานเอกอัครราชทูตไทย ณ กรุงวอชิงตัน และยังได้รับเกียรติจาก ดร.สุริยา จินดาวงษ์ เอกอัครราชทูตไทยประจำสหรัฐอเมริกา เดินทางมาร่วมเป็นเจ้าภาพของงานในวันดังกล่าว ซึ่งสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความสำคัญทางวัฒนธรรมและความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตที่ซุกซ้อนอยู่ภายในผลงานชิ้นนี้ได้เป็นอย่างดี

ในปี พ.ศ. 2550 มูลนิธิ 100 ต้นสน ในขณะที่ยังเป็น 100 ต้นสนแกลเลอรี่ เป็นหนึ่งในผู้ประสานงานการผลิตผลงาน Wish You Were Here เอดิชั่นแรก และหลังจากนั้นประติมากรรมชิ้นนี้ยังได้ถูกส่งไปอยู่ในคอลเลกชั่นส่วนตัว ณ เมือง Napa, รัฐ California จนกระทั่งในปี พ.ศ.2567 ผลงานชิ้นนี้ได้ถูกส่งมอบเข้าสู่คอลเลกชั่นอันสำคัญของ Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden ในฐานะของขวัญจากคุณเอ๋ เอกอนงค์ พรรณเชษฐ์ ผู้ก่อตั้งมูลนิธิ 100 ต้นสน และสามี คุณ Roger Evans

นอกจากการผลงานชิ้นนี้ของ ชาติชาย ปุยเปีย ยังมีผลงานจากศิลปินร่วมสมัยไทยอีกสองท่าน คือ ฤกษ์ฤทธิ์ ตีระวนิช และ พินรี สัณฑ์พิทักษ์ อยู่ในชุดผลงานสะสมของพิพิธภัณฑ์ โดยผลงานของทั้งสามท่านต่างก็ได้รับการส่งมอบเข้าสู่คอลเลคชั่นอันสำคัญนี้โดย คุณเอ๋ เอกอนงค์ พรรณเชษฐ์ ผู้ก่อตั้งมูลนิธิ 100 ต้นสน ซึ่งสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความมุ่งมั่นตั้งใจของมูลนิธิที่มีมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง ในการนำเสนอศิลปะร่วมสมัยในประเทศไทยต่อ พิพิธภัณฑ์ หน่วยงานหรือสถาบันนานาชาติอันมีชื่อเสียง และส่งเสริมการแลกเปลี่ยนทางวัฒนธรรมผ่านการสร้างความรับรู้ระดับสากล

 

ประวัติโดยย่อของศิลปิน

ชาติชาย ปุยเปีย เป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินร่วมสมัยชาวไทยที่มีความสำคัญเป็นอย่างมาก เขาเป็นที่ยกย่องจากผลงานที่มีความลื่นไหลระหว่างงานจิตรกรรมและงานประติมากรรม ผลงานของเขาสะท้อนแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับความปรารถนา การใคร่ครวญ ความเชื่อทางจิตวิญญาณ ความทรงจำ และความสงบ โดยเขาได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากภาพความทรงจำเกี่ยวกับชีวิตในชนบทและประสบการณ์ส่วนตัว สิ่งเหล่านี้เองได้ส่งผลให้ผลงานของเขาสามารถสื่อสารข้ามวัฒนธรรมด้วยสัญญะในเชิงกวีและความลึกซึ้งทางอารมณ์ ชาติชาย ปุยเปียได้รับการยอมรับจากศิลปิน นักวิจารณ์ศิลปะ และนักสะสมมากมาย มาอย่างต่อเนื่องยาวนาน ล่าสุดกับผลงานแสดงครั้งสำคัญ Catch the Moon | Chatchai Puipia: The Caught Years จัดแสดงที่หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร (พ.ศ. 2567-2568)

ชาติชายสำเร็จการศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรและได้รับการยอมรับในระดับนานาชาติจากชุดผลงาน “Siamese Smile” ซึ่งเป็นภาพเหมือนตนเอง (self-portrait) ผลงานของเขาได้รับการจัดแสดงในระดับนานาชาติที่สถาบันสำคัญหลายแห่ง อาทิ Asia Society Museum และ Queens Museum, นิวยอร์ก สหรัฐอเมริกา (พ.ศ. 2539-2530); Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), Queensland ออสเตรเลีย (พ.ศ. 2539-2530); ZKM, Karlsruhe เยอรมนี (พ.ศ. 2550); และ Saatchi Gallery, ลอนดอน อังกฤษ (พ.ศ. 2558-2559)

นอกจากนี้ผลงานของชาติชาย ปุยเปีย ยังอยู่ในคอลเลกชันสาธารณของสถาบันศิลปะอันสำคัญอีกหลายแห่ง รวมถึง Mori Art Museum; Fukuoka Asian Art Museum; และ National Gallery Singapore รวมไปถึงที่โรงแรม Park Hyatt Bangkok กรุงเทพมหานคร นอกจากนี้ เขายังได้รับการยกย่องเป็นเป็นศิลปินศิลปาธร (Silpathorn Award) ในปี พ.ศ. 2549
