A two-day pop-up transforms an art delivery truck into a mobile gallery, culminating in a collaborative drawing performance before it returns to the road.

What if the truck that carries art could become an art space itself?

 

In Drawing, Parinot Kunakornwong expands the idea of “drawing” beyond marks made on paper or canvas. Drawing can also be understood as an act of moving from one point to another: tracing a route, connecting one place to another, creating a map, or recording a journey. Drawing—across different forms, scales, and media—has long been an integral part of Parinot ’s practice.

Drawing #3: Undo brings together Parinot , art delivery driver and artist Choak Saroj (Madee Boonchuen), and a group of musicians in a collaborative act of “drawing.”

Known to many within Thailand’s art community, Choak Saroj has transported artworks for artists for many years, working with everyone from art students to established artists. His modified pickup truck, fitted with a customised truck topper, connects artworks, artists, galleries, museums, art spaces, and institutions as it travels from one place to another. The routes traced by Choak and his truck can themselves be understood as another form of drawing—a constantly evolving map shaped by the movement of art.

Through his work in close proximity to artworks and artists, Choak began making his own art in his spare time, using simple, readily available materials. In 2019, he had the opportunity to present his work in the group exhibition Thailand and Japan ART BRUT: Figure of Unknown Beauty at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC).

For Drawing at 100 Tonson Foundation, it was Choak and his truck that transported Parinot’s works from the artist’s studio on Phetchaburi Road to the Foundation—once again connecting artist, artwork, and art space. During this journey, a conversation emerged between Parinot and Choak about Choak’s wish to transform his pickup truck into a mobile art gallery: a space for displaying artworks while travelling from place to place.

This collaboration at 100 Tonson Foundation marks a first step towards realising that idea. For Gallery on Wheels, Choak’s familiar working vehicle temporarily takes on another role, becoming an exhibition space for his own drawings and paintings. In doing so, he shifts between—and brings together—his roles as an art transporter and an artist.

The mobile gallery will appear at 100 Tonson Foundation as a special two-day pop-up before the truck returns to its everyday duty of transporting artworks.

Parinot , Choak Saroj, and three musicians will come together for Drawing Performance, conceived as a ritual before the truck continues its journey.

Here, performance becomes another form of drawing and another means of recording. Rather than working with conventional drawing materials such as pencil, graphite, or charcoal, Parinot will use objects retrieved from beneath the ground—materials that carry traces of the history, events, and incidents embedded in Phetchaburi Road, where his studio is located and along which Choak’s truck has travelled.

The performance will unfold alongside sound musics created by Teerapat Parnmongkol, Pathompon Tesprateep, and Nawitnan Poolkeao, musicians with whom Parinot played during an earlier period of his involvement in the music scene.

Emerging from different sound sources and unfolding freely and simultaneously, the music, actions, objects, and movements will encounter and respond to one another in real time. Through these spontaneous relationships, the performance traces another kind of drawing—one that accompanies the movement and eventual “undoing” of Choak’s Gallery on Wheels.
